Certain truths are no longer engrained in our culture so when uncertainty comes we're thrown all off balance. We need to know these truths so when trouble comes we're prepared to meet it.
Welcome to Politics by Faith. Thank you for being here. I just want to play this clip of J.D. Vance to start off with. I just saw this a moment ago. It's worth playing.
Now we know, of course, the last administration liked to throw people in jail for silently praying outside of pro-life clinics. We know that the last administration wanted to protect taxpayer-funded abortion right up into the moment of birth on every single one of those issues in 30 short days Donald J Trump has gone in the exact opposite direction and I am thankful for that and I'm sure that every single person in
this room is thankful for that as well. There has never been a more pro-life than Donald Trump and J.D. Vance in his heart is a true pro-life activist. It's wonderful to see and I look forward to after all this Doge stuff and everything is done, we tackle one of the greatest sins in our nation
and that is, of course, abortion. I want to chat a bit about what we were talking about yesterday and that is God in control of everything. And if you don't believe that, if you don't really believe that deep down in your core, then you'll be anxious. The motivation for talking about it yesterday was federal employees losing their jobs, but it applies to
everyone all the time. God is in control of everything. I just want to take a minute to prove that so that we can know it deeper and deeper in our core. Ephesians 1 11 says, in him we have obtained inheritance having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will all things right there but later I think he just means something all things John Piper put a list together Proverbs 69 the heart of man plans his way but the Lord establishes his steps
Proverbs 20 24 a man's steps are from the Lord how then can man understand his way again God controlling your actions Proverbs 1633 the lot is cast into the lap but it's every decision is from the Lord so we can think we're doing things to figure out the way, but every decision is from Proverbs 19, 21. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
It's great, we can plan all we want, but it's the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Jeremiah 10, 23. I know, O Lord, that the man of way is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps amos 3 6 is a trumpet blown in a city and the people are not afraid does disaster come to a city unless the
lord has done it god's in control of everything all things now i'll be honest my nature doesn't like this and you may be resisting these scriptures like like i did i don't like this my sinful nature doesn't i don't want someone else to be in control. I want to be in control of everything. But then I realize
the more that I try to control things the more anxious I am. Because I can't do anything. And then I do the best I can to snap out of it. And the sooner I realize that I can do nothing my sinful heart totally depraved
I bring nothing to the table on my own The more I realize that the more relieved I am that God is in control and he's it took me forever to Make this circle, but now I can do it pretty quickly Where it's like I want to control I get anxious. Oh wait. I can't do anything God is in control I Can actually do that pretty quickly in my mind now. And thank goodness for that.
That relief, taking that pressure off you. Lamentations 337, who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it. James 4, now listen, you who say today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.
It's great.
I just think of that, I'll finish the scripture in a second. But someone losing their job, but I had plans, I intended, I wanted to, I expected to, this is what I, I had my dream job. Now listen you who say, today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
Instead, you ought to say, if it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this and that. I think I alluded to something like this yesterday, that it's probably not helpful if someone's just lost their job to just come like hit them with scripture. I think I had some like pseudo snarky comment like, like a motivational phrase written on the front of a notebook in fancy font. You can just like hit someone with that. They're like, feel better.
These are things that in our culture, this is a worldview that used to be deeply ingrained in our culture and everyone agreed with and taught our kids from a young age and then when terrible things happened we were prepared for them emotionally spiritually mentally physically in every single way because we just knew this was true and we've lost that so now when calamity or anything hits we don't know where to what to do or how to think or what to feel or I and we're just in
total panic and then we try to come in later and be like, oh, well, here's a scripture of something you've never read before that might make you feel better, right, and it doesn't because I don't, most people are like, James four, what? I don't, who cares?
What is James, who's James, who? And that's one of the shames of where we've become in our culture. Now we gotta bring it back and not just throw scripture here and there, but really get it deeply ingrained back in culture and back in people's hearts
in a profound way. Second thing is, someone will say, oh, but Slater, heartbreaking things happen in life. Things we really, really, really don't want. And I know this is easy for me to say right now because the Slater home is doing pretty good right now.
No major issues at the moment, things are going pretty good. Minor issues, you know, here and there. A little normal life stuff, but nothing awful. So it's easy for me to say, hey, everyone, trust God. But what about if you're going through a really tough time?
Psalm 9 9, the Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. So the truth is, it's funny in our world, we would make it seem as if, well here's a truth but if things are bad then it's not true anymore. But the truth is, here's the truth, and it's even more true when times are tough. It was always true, and now it's more true.
And right now is a time of uncertainty for a lot of people, and in a lot of ways, Trump's shaking everything up. Actually, we talked a little bit about this on SiriusXM. I'll just do the very quick of it. Douglas Murray wrote an essay
about the American philosopher William James who was in San Francisco during the earthquake in 1906 and he wrote about how violent and horrible this earthquake was he said it was shaking the room exactly as a terrier shakes a rat. That's a graphic image but you can think of this dog flipping back and forth this rat is flying all over it. But as he walked out of chaos. And this is even on the first day.
So his first observation was in times of crisis, certain individuals naturally step forward to organize and lead, regardless of their official position. These people quickly establish structure and direction amidst the confusion. The people who are getting fired from their jobs,
federal jobs, some people handle uncertainty better.
I read some quote the other day,
like the most successful people are those who can handle uncertainty the best. I think of Paul, Acts 20, 22, says, "'I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, "'not knowing what will happen to me there.'" How about that?
I have no idea what's going to happen. I've just got to go. The Holy Spirit told me to. He handled uncertainty quite well. Second observation from William James was he noticed that the people on the ground, despite the obvious tragedy around them, had a way better attitude than the people who
were far away. He said people who quiver and sicken in imagination and sent panicked letters from the opposite coast. So the people on the East Coast who read about the earthquake, they were all freaking out in their imagination about what was happening. But the people in San Francisco, even amidst the actual chaos itself,
they were working hard and focused and they were rebuilding. It was the people who were far away who were reading about the earthquake and the chaos. They were more panicked than the people actually in the chaos. The people in the chaos were surprisingly calm and doing everything they could to adapt and make it right. It was the distant observers who were anxious and freaking out.
Interesting, right? And on the radio I made some parallel about Doge and from the outside looking in it seemed like chaos and disorder. And there is some chaos to it all, of course, that's part of it. But the people who are doing this all, the Doge guys, they are operating in a Zen-like flow state of rebuilding what has already been destroyed. They didn't destroy it. It is in a state of just
having been destroyed. We're rebuilding it now in a much more efficient and sensible way. So, purpose of today's episode, a friendly reminder to me and all of us that God is in control of all things. So take that burden off your shoulders. Prepare for the future, be wise, make the best decisions you can in the moment based on what you know in the moment.
Learn from mistakes, yours and others. But throughout it all, trust God. He will provide you with exactly what you need, precisely when you need it. We may interpret in the moment as good or bad or what I want or don't want,
but it will all be done according to the purposes of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will. Just even saying it out loud makes my anxiety go down. I just feel it.
