Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame has passed away. I've always been a fan of Phil's. I admire his conviction and his desire to tell the truth and not care a rip what people think. We'd be a better country if we all had a bit more Phil Robertson in us.
Welcome to Politics by Faith. Thank you for being here. Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty has passed away. I love Phil. I'm always entertained by Phil. I always watch every clip I see of him.
The thing I admire the most about him is he does not care one rip if you agree with him or not. He knows what the Bible says, he repeats what the Bible says, and that's the end of it. We played this clip on the radio today, all the time on the radio, many many many times I've played the clip of him at CPAC and he goes on this whole thing about STDs. And this is many years ago.
I'm gonna say 2016 maybe. And this really opened my eyes about being bold because I've never heard anyone talk about STDs. And I've never heard anyone say, if you don't sleep around with people, one man, one woman, wait till marriage,
then you will never get an STD. It's like so obviously true, I mean, he was attacked for it, but so obviously true. And so boldly stated with confidence. It was like a pivot point in my, wasn't like, it was a pivot point
in my political awakening, actually, this moment, the CPAC speech from Phil Robertson. It's like, Oh, yeah, like just say what's true and say it boldly because it's true. Uh, here's another clip that I haven't seen. And I just want to play this one because it's of the same topic. Uh, this is, uh, the Babylon Bee. They played a video of, uh, they recorded him watching music videos of music these days.
What's that one's name?
Who?
Kayla Swift.
The evil one done got to her too.
I think you're gonna like being in the background.
What's that one's name? Beyonce.
Beyonce. And you wonder why 110 million of us have a sexually transmitted disease at any given time? So, according to God, the Center for Disease Control and me, don't listen to that chick. She'll lead you down a path into the microbe world.
She'll take you down a path you don't want to go down. What path is that? The path of the micro world.
You know what?
It's true.
Boys, look out.
The microbes are coming. They will rot your genitals off.
It's true. That's true. It's true. It is true. Here's a more. by faith appropriate part. This is a four minute clip.
This is a sermon he gave a couple of years back.
For God in flesh to love Phil Robertson being the scumbag that I was. A scumbag. I told you. Filthy language coming out of my mouth. Oh, it was pathetic. I didn't know any better. Dead in my sins.
The guy who wrote most of the New Testament, murderer.
We converted a guy because he was running dope across I-10. African American guy. He was a brother. He went to college in South Louisiana. Hauled a load of dope across the great state of Texas.
The laws caught him. His mama, one of her sisters,
asked me to go down there and plead for mercy with the judge, Huntsville, Texas. I said, I'll do it. So I drove down there on the day the old judge sentenced him and I got up and I made a plea for my brother who was fixing to be sent to prison. Please cut him some slack.
Mr. Robinson, you have any problem with dealing with a drug dealer? The state of Texas dispensing justice against a drug dealer? I said, I have no problem with that. I know what justice is. I'm asking for mercy, judge.
He gave my brother none. So 13 years later, after they sentenced him, I was there when they sent him up, and Willie was there when he walked outside the prison gates. You say, y'all stuck with that brother? Every step of the way.
He walked out of prison. Willie said, was it worth it? He said, no, it was not worth it, not at all. So 12 and a half, 13 years, he spent in prison. I said, Paul, I said, you come to my house.
You stay there. No charge.
You live with me, Miss Kay, till you get on your feet.
He married a girl who was half black and half Latino. We married him in my yard and the local rednecks were driving by launching their boat down the way and they were looking over there and they saw Mexicans, blacks And the rednecks, the rednecks of Roseland, when I pulled by, I lost my boat. I looked over and I saw all of that going on. He said, I knew right then there got to be a God. They ain't shooting, they ain't cutting, they all loving one another and singing songs of God, thinking God.
Old Paul was there after being in prison all them years. You see what the family of God is like? We are known for our love for one another. God became flesh, died on a cross for the sins of the world. Jesus is his name. Three days later, he solved your grave problem.
All of your problems have been solved. God did every bit of this. You can't earn it. You can't work for it. It's all been done for you.
It's free.
And the bottom line is you're not getting out of here
without it. Don't kid yourself. You're arguing with your wife and cursing and carrying on. You're like, what am I doing? Repent, turn to God, believe the gospel, obey it. They'll baptize you in a few days.
The old you will disappear and the new you will come forth. God will seal the deal. Now that you purified yourself by obeying the truth, Peter said, love one another deeply from the heart. For you've been born again. I told you the first birth gets you here.
The second birth, being born of God, of water and the Spirit will get you out of here. One thing's for sure, you're not getting out of here alive. You have no chance if you keep getting high, getting drunk and walling around and filth coming out of your mouth.
It's a confidence and conviction that he has, the way he speaks, but not just on stage at church, but everything he did all the time. When Phil died no tear should be shed he is thrilled right now he's loving his eternal life that's a life well lived isn't it to not fear death at all. He just doesn't care even in his TV show his business he's I'm gonna do it the right way God's way it's gonna work out we're gonna end every show with a prayer. That's what they did at Duck Dynasty. We're going to end every show with a prayer because we
want to and that's what we're going to do. And if you don't want it, you can walk. TV crews, you guys can leave. It's fine. To fight battles like that and to win. Very encouraging to see. I think if we could all have a little more Phil Robertson in us, his style, that confidence rooted not in the self. Clearly the old Phil Robertson, if you know his backstory, that has been put to death. It's not confidence in himself, of course, confidence in God, confidence in the Word,
and not caring about what people think and not caring what the consequences are of telling the truth. How incredibly liberating is that? So I read Acts 32 this morning and I was going to do an episode here on citizenship and what Paul's Roman citizenship meant and why it mattered and we can connect that to what citizenship means today. Maybe we could save that for tomorrow.
But something else came to mind as well. In Acts 22 Paul is just telling the truth. So we start in Acts 21, now as they were seeking to kill him, Paul, news came to the commander of the garrison that all Jerusalem was on an uproar. He immediately took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. And when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. Then the commander came near, took him and commanded him to be bound with two chains.
And he asked him what he was, who he was, and what he had done. Everyone's calling for Peter to die. They're beating him to death. Paul's been near death before. Then as Paul was about to be led to the barracks, he said to the commander, may I speak to you? Then he got up and he spoke in Hebrew, the language of the people who were trying to kill him.
This was the moment. Boldly, I imagine. Like Phil Robertson talks. Different language, different accent, but same confidence. Like Phil Robertson talks. Different language, different accent, but same confidence. I just want to read this whole thing.
Paul said, I am indeed a Jew born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our father's law and was zealous towards God as you all are today. I persecuted this way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons, both men and women, as also the high priest bears me witness and all the councils of the elders from whom I also received letters to the brethren and
went to Damascus to bring in chains, even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished, I went far away to get these Christians to kill them. Then something happened and everyone has a story This is Paul's now it happened as I journeyed and came to Damascus at about noon Suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me Saul Saul Why are you persecuting me? So I answered who are you Lord?
And he said to me I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting. And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of him who spoke to me. So I said, what shall I do Lord? Came out with Lord right away. And the Lord said to me, arise and go into Damascus. And there you will be told all the things which are appointed for you to do. And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus. Then a certain Ananias, a devout man, according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there came to me and he stood and said
to me, brother, Saul, receive your sight. And at that same hour, I looked up at him. Then he said, the God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know his will and see the just one and hear the voice of his mouth for you will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard and now why are you waiting arise and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the Lord and the crowd heard this and said, wow great point Paul! You're amazing! Let's eat dinner and let's have great time, we love you now. No, they wanted to kill him
even more because he said the word Gentiles. He said Gentiles. Here, God told him, then he, Jesus said to me, depart for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles. And then the next line, this is Acts 22, 22. And they listened to him until this word. And then they raised their voices and said, away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live. Then as they cried out and tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air." Just the rage that they were filled with at this idea when he
said the word Gentiles. Erupting in this rage that Gentiles could be saved. That people who didn't deserve it, who deserved it less than Paul, who deserves salvation? No one. Not you or me.
But we have it. I hope you do.
As Phil said, you can't earn it. You bring nothing to the table. But now you've been saved, like Paul. So just go and be a witness to all men of what you've seen, what you've heard, in your life. Tell the truth, with confidence and conviction.
