Americans are generally in a rush. We want what we want, and we want it now. But things take time. And everything is in God's timing. From Patrick Henry's speech 260 years ago to Trump's election to everything in your life, God's timing is perfect.
Welcome to Politics by Faith. Thanks for being here. Today is the 260th anniversary of something, but it fits in, and that's not a great number. We're weird about round numbers. 250th sounds way better, even though 260 is older, but we'll tie it into the 250th anniversary. It's all part of it so the backstory is that England had a ton of debt from the Seven Years War
they needed money and just so happened they had a colony over here third they called him the 13 colonies they had a bunch of them so they said we'll just get money from them so they passed among other things the the Stamp Act. It's March 1765. So anything printed, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, everything had to pay this stamp tax. So it was this paper that was printed in England, had this red stamp on it,
with the crown and said America on the top. And so it was printed in England and it was shipped over and sold by government officials. So if you needed a legal document made, you had to go to the government official and pay for the special paper.
That's how you paid the tax. And then you could print the document on it and the document was not legally binding unless it was on the official documents. So that's how that worked. This, the colonists did not take kindly to this. This
was the beginning of taxation without representation. Enter Hatcher Henry, one of our amazing patriots. It doesn't get, this guy doesn't get enough attention. Virginia legislature. He was in the Virginia House of Burgesses. And we don't know the exact speech, but we know a couple of the lines. He said Tarquin and Caesar each had his Brutus, Charles the first, his Cromwell and George the third and people, I will explain this quick. So Brutus, a guy named Brutus killed or expelled Tarquin. We've shared that story before on the radio.
I don't know if we shared it here. It's awesome. It's one of the great stories of all time. Maybe we'll share it another day. We'll definitely share another day. But Brutus expelled the evil Tarquin.
Caesar was assassinated by a different Brutus, two different Brutuses. Charles I was executed by Oliver Cromwell. So the guys in the House of Birds, now at the time, most people were loyalists to the king. So here we have this Patrick Henry rabble rouser getting up and throwing King George,
George III in the mix here with Tarquin and Caesar and Charles I, and a bunch of people started yelling, treason, treason, at Patrick Henry. Like, not in support. Yelling at your traitor, traitor.
And he said, if this be treason, make the most of it. And then he said, and George the third may profit by their example. Meaning it would be wise for King George to learn from the mistakes of these previous tyrants. Fast forward 10 years, King George did not learn the mistake of these previous tyrants but this speech was given on May 29th 1765 a young Thomas Jefferson was in the room sort of he was a law student just a kid and he was in the hallway actually and he was listening through the door or at the doorway, I should say, uh, to Patrick Henry speech.
And he said, uh, that Patrick Henry spoke torrents of sublime eloquence. No one's ever described my show like that. No one's ever said, sign up and these three hours a day, three hours a day, you are just, just throwing out torrents of sublime eloquence. I've never gotten that before. So from this speech, the Virginia House of Purges passed three resolutions.
They passed it by one vote, but there were a couple others that didn't pass. And it's okay because, so the ones that did pass said, hey, no taxation without representation. The ones that didn't pass said, we're not following any of your laws
that are not passed by the colonists. Those didn't pass, but they were spread in newspapers. Just the same, they were spread in newspapers and implanted in the hearts of the colonists, which percolated. They percolated there for 10 years until the time was right. Until the moment was right for revolution, 1776. A lot of other things obviously happening in those 10 years
and it just spoke to me that everything has its purpose and everything has its timing. I get annoyed at the timing of things a lot but it's just pride. It's just me trying to control things. And I want to pivot to the Bible here because there's so much in the Bible about time. Every time I read the Bible, there's time. If nothing else, there's, I'm always, I'm not always,
I like to be aware of how long things take. So even when Jesus walks from point A to point B, in the Bible, there's no time that elapses. It's just one sentence to the next. But you think, oh no, there was a week.
It's a week's distance to go from this town to the next town. It's a week of Jesus walking and talking and doing things and praying and his disciples with him. It's a week of the boys together.
The Bible doesn't say everything. So there's, there's time immersed throughout the entire Bible. And then the more obvious ones. Uh, so the Israelites punished for 40 years in the desert, 40 years, you guys got to wander around here. Family, we're working through judges right now. And the Israelites time and time again, still turning away from God and then taken over by
neighboring Kings. And under this next evil King, the king reigned for 20 years. Right? It's like, oh, that's not a quick little punishment. 20 years. I think this is an important point even for Americans, especially for Americans to have patience in God's timing.
And we really don't. 2 Peter 3 says, scoffers will come in the last days walking according to their own lusts. I just like that scripture, but a little later it says, but beloved, do not forget this one thing. So the scoffers are about the second coming. So there's people who are like, oh, it'll never happen. It'll never happen. You're, you know, you know, you get idiots, you losers, right? But beloved, do not forget this one thing that with the Lord, one day is as a thousand years, and
a thousand years as one day. To God, nothing is long, nothing is short. He's outside of time. Charles Spurgeon said, all things are equally near and present to his view. The distance of a thousand years before the occurrence of an event is no more to him than would be the interval of a day. With God, indeed, there
is neither past, present, nor future. He takes for his name the I am. He is the I am. I am in the present. I am in the past. I am in the future. Just as we say of God that he's everywhere. And this is because we understand that I think for some reason that's interesting. We can grasp the idea that God's everywhere all the time. I mean, that's pretty impossible to, so you think that would be inconceivable
people, but like I can grasp that. Oh yeah, he's everywhere. He sees everything all the time. Okay. Right. But equally, we can say that he is always, that's where we're like, well, what? I don't get that one. He's always, he's everywhere in space. He's everywhere in time, but we want things now. Yeah.
Well, we're not in control. How about when Jesus was born, Galatians 4, 4, but when the appointed time came, God sent his son born of a woman born under the law. When the appointed time came, the last book of the old Testament and the birth of Jesus is 400 years. So no prophets, no revealed scripture for 400 years. God was at work of course, but 400 years. So no prophets, no revealed scripture for 400 years. God was at work, of course, but 400 years. Other moments of time that stand out, of course, Abraham and Sarah,
God promised Abraham a son and descendants as numerous as the stars. It's 25 years before Isaac was born. 25 years of a promise made, but no, no fulfillment of it. 25 years of patience. And all that time, Sarah was nine 99, ultimately 99. So Isaac of course means he laughs or I shouldn't say, of course, I didn't know that until I heard it, but you may have heard it before that laughter means laughter in Hebrew because Abraham
and Sarah laughed at God's promise of a son in their old age, but it's God's timing. Everything is, we have a role. Of course, it's never means to sit back and do nothing, but God is always at work. Maybe you can think of moments in your life when God gave you the gift of understanding some timing. You're like, oh yeah, that happened then so that then this could happen so that then this all could come together like this.
Thank you God, I see it, thank you. Those are little gifts. But most of the time we don't know the timing, we just have to have faith. I'll end with Lamentations, Lamentations 325. The Lord is good to those who wait for him. To the soul that seeks him. It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. We want things to be good right now immediately.
I want what and by good, I mean what I want. You know, the Israelites when Moses went up on Mount Sinai, I don't know how many days exactly until they built the bull, built the golden calf, but Moses was only up there for 40 days before he came back, 40.
So it was less than 40 days. And they're like, we can't wait any longer. He's never coming back. They couldn't wait 40 days, a month. Spurgeon said, do not be in a hurry. Do not expect to be delivered out of your trouble.
The first time you begin to cry unto God. Oh no, the Lord is good unto them that wait for him to the soul that seeks him. So hard to hear when you're in the midst of suffering. If you're not at the moment, maybe this is your time to hear it. Trust God's timing. If I must, I usually don't end on a political note.
I usually like to end on a Bible note, but I'll bring it back around to a political note. I usually like to end on a Bible note, but I'll bring it back around to a political note. There is no question that it is better that Donald Trump lost politically in 2020 so that he could come back and win again in 2024. Now, if you told me in 2020, hey, Sider, don't worry,
it'll all work out or it's better this way. I clearly would not have believed you. But it is better this way. Not everything always works out better in our perspective that we can see. But just know that God is always at work. And we have to trust in his timing always. MikeSlater.Locals. com. Transcript commercial free on the website. Mike Slater dot locals dot com.
