The truth, "God loves you" sounds so watered down and meaningless today. But that's because we're missing the first part of the story. When you realize what we deserve, the love is all the more unbelievable.
Good morning. Welcome to Morning Motivation brought to you by Patriot Gold Group and Public Square. This week we've been talking about why me? Why me, God? And some of the themes we've pointed to are God's timing, God's wisdom, God's plan. And I'm going to say something right now that over the years has become so watered down, so prosperity gospel, so trite, it's completely, it seems meaningless. I mean it's one of the most amazing things in the world, but it seems meaningless when people say, God loves you. Okay, whatever. Romans 5.8, but God demonstrates his own love for us in this, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Let's give the prosperity gospel version of this verse.

God loves you because you are great. You are awesome. Who couldn't love you? Honestly. I mean, you are so perfect and so wonderful and so lovable. You are lovable. So, of course, God loves you. That's not it at all. That approach makes it seem like God is doing the obvious thing. What's not to love about me? How could God not love me?

Jonathan Edwards had a very different approach. His famous sermon, Sinner in the Hands of an Angry God. I encourage you to read the whole thing. It's one of the most important works of art in American history. He says, the God that holds you, so at first I just want, let's start with the first imagery again. Oh, like God loves you because you're awesome. And of course he would love you. Who wouldn't love you?

Everyone loves you. Here's how Jonathan Edwards puts it. The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you. Well, I thought you told me God loves me. It's Friday. Why are you doing this to me? God abhors you and is dreadfully provoked. His wrath towards you burns like fire. He looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire. He is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in his sight.

You are ten thousand times more abominable in his eyes than the most hateful, venomous serpent is in ours. You have offended him infinitely more than ever did a stubborn rebel did his prince, and yet it is nothing but his hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment. It is to be ascribed to nothing else that you did not go to hell last night, that you were suffered to awake again in this world after you closed your eyes to sleep. And there's no other reason to be given why you have not dropped into hell since you arose this morning, but that God's hand has held you up.

There's no other reason to be given why you have not gone to hell since you have sat here in the house of God, provoking his pure eyes by your sinful, wicked manner of attending his solemn worship. Nay, there is nothing else that is to be given as a reason why you do not this very moment drop down into hell. O sinner, consider the fearful danger you are in. Wow! Slater, jeez!

What? Why? That's what you deserve. Now let's go back to Romans 5.8 While we were still sinners, while we were still as John of Edwards just described there, while you were that, Christ died for you. Why? So that you can be with God forever. God cared for you when you were still an enemy. He didn't need to save you. You were not worthy of being saved.

He saved you when you weren't even looking for Him. Ephesians 1 says He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love, He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ. Wow, so the point here is, if you're, and there's a million points, and this is right, but the point relevant to this week is, if you're going through suffering, you must know that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-wise, and loves you.

So four minutes ago, when I said God loves you, it was like, well, yeah, of course. But when you realize the depravity of your sin, when you realize what you really deserve, and that's God's wrath, when you know that, and then hear that God loves you. That's everything. What else? What more could there possibly be? We're so anxious about this and that and the rest. Put your desires to death. God's are so much better.
