There's a popular Christianese expression that St. Francis of Assisi did NOT say, "Preach the Gospel, and if necessary, use words". That's not Biblical at all. And in today's time, it's essential to get it right.
Good morning. Welcome to The Morning Motivation, brought to you by Public Square and Patriot Gold Group. I'm grateful you're here. Thanks for making this podcast successful and growing. That's awesome. So let's keep this party going. I want to talk about something that Christians say that's just not true, and I think this is really important to talk about right now because we can't rest on our laurels anymore as Christians. I don't think we can just sit back and be like, well, we're just gonna live a great life and hopefully people will just see us and wonder why we're living so great.

And then we need to be vocal. I think we need to be bold. We need to speak the truth because look around. Look at the culture we live in. This is a culture of lies. This is a culture where people don't even think there is such thing as truth. And of course, chaos will result. And I say good because people desperately, many people desperately want truth. And it's up to us to preach it, not just live it.

There's an expression, a Christian-ese expression that you've heard before. Preach the gospel, and if necessary, use words. I would like to take that saying and crumple it up into a little ball and burn it. Put it in a little bottle and throw it off a cliff and never hear from it ever again. It's attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi from like the 1200s. He never said it, but even if he did, is it true? Is that good, wise advice? It's not biblical, I'll tell you that. So the idea is that you should just live a good life and in doing so you are preaching the Bible without even having to use any words. And I think this is appealing to a lot of people because it's a cop-out. It can be hard, it can be difficult, it can awkward to share the gospel, to preach the good news, to evangelize. The word evangelize in Greek means to spread the good news.

It can be hard to do that. And I think a lot of me, at least when this quote appealed to me, it gave me an out. I would feel an urge to share the good news with someone, but then I'd get nervous, and I would say, Oh, well, I don't have to use words, I'll just be nice. And then maybe one day, they'll notice, and they'll come to me and they'll say, Wow, you're different. I'd like to learn about Jesus. Has that ever happened? And the devil loves it, because the Bible is very clear that you should indeed use words.

But it's gotten into most Christians' heads that, oh, you don't have to. Matthew 28 tells his disciples to go and make more disciples, and he tells them to go teach. He didn't say go out and live a nice life and hope that people come to you and ask why. He said, go preach! But it can't be more clear than in Romans 10, 14. Paul says, how then will they call on him in whom they have not believed?
0:03:13
And how are they to believe in Him of whom they've never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?" Of course, you should also live a godly life that makes people stop and wonder what's going on with you and your family and all the rest. That cannot be your primary means of teaching the gospel, especially in our culture today when people are so desperate, so thirsty for something eternal. The things in the Bible are history. You can't teach people about, let's say, American history by living a life that suggests you love America, right? If you're like a patriotic person, no one's going to come to you and be like, oh, tell me about George Washington. You seem to be someone who's like, no, you have to teach people about American history in order for people to learn about it.

It's the same with the Bible. You have to teach it. You have to talk about it. And then how you live affirms to them that you actually believe it. How you live is affirmation that you believe what you're preaching. So I just want to encourage you, well, first let's put to death this nonsense of preach the gospel and if necessary use words like enough of that I want to encourage you to go out and preach the gospel share the good news Don't hide behind a nice sounding but unbiblical expression Stick with just the first three words of it preach the gospel period Tomorrow we'll debunk another one of these Christianese expressions.

It's, God will never give you more than you can handle. Yes, he will. We'll do that tomorrow.
