Rainn Wilson said he was never happy when he was filming The Office. He was a big TV star, super famous, making a ton of money. How could he not be happy? Because he wanted more. He wanted to be a big MOVIE star and make millions of dollars. Jesus speaks to this to 70 of his followers in Luke 10.
Morning, welcome to the Morning Motivation brought to you by the Public Square App and Patriot Gold Group. I'm very excited about the theme this week. You may have saw the other day, Rainn Wilson, he played Dwight on The Office, said he was never happy when he was filming The Office. He said, when I was in The Office, I spent several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn't enough. I'm on a hit show, Emmy nominated every year, making lots of money, working with people like Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, and these amazing writers and incredible directors, right? So he's got it all. He says, I'm on one of the great TV shows, people love it, and I wasn't enjoying it.
Why not?

I was thinking about, why am I not a movie star? Why am I not the next Jack Black or the next Will Ferrell? How come I can't have a movie career? Why don't I have this development deal? He said, I was making hundreds of thousands. I wanted millions. I was a TV star, but I wanted to be a movie star. It was never enough. The tale is old as time. One reason I love the Bible so much is because it deals with human nature, which has never changed. And to me, it's very encouraging to read stories about people thousands of years ago who have the same issues that we have today. You just read about Solomon, how it's never enough, vanity of vanities, and there it is. Thousands of years ago, and it's the same as Rainn Wilson and all of us today. And that's encouraging to me. Maybe it's discouraging because we still haven't learned, we still haven't figured it out, but it's encouraging because to me it's one of the proofs that the Bible is true. So I was talking to a friend about this quote in Rainn Wilson and he could not fathom why Rainn Wilson was unhappy. He couldn't get it. He had everything he wanted. He wanted a thing, he worked to get it, he got it, he should be happy. And my friend just could not fathom his unhappiness. And my point to him was that we are so deceived as sinners, we're not even sure what we want. So sure, he wanted a thing and he got it, but that doesn't equal happiness. That doesn't mean you should be happy because he misaimed. He aimed poorly. We all do all the time. We don't know what we want or maybe we know we want, but we don't know what we need. We don't know what will make us happy. We work our whole lives to get these things that we think or achieve this or get the fame or whatever, that will make us happy. And it can take a whole lifetime to realize how off we were. People work so hard to get the fame, get the money, get the promotion, get the whatever. Vanity of vanity is all is vanity. And I just pray that people realize soon in their life that they're aiming at the wrong target one of my favorite quotes I think of all the time Jim Carrey he said I think everybody should get rich and famous and have everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer so that's the motivation for this story out of the Bible that I want to share from Luke 10 it's an amazing story and I've never dug deep into it until now. So it's in Luke 10, Jesus tells, he sends out his 70 disciples into towns ahead of him and says, he said, heal the sick in them and say to them, the kingdom of God has come near to you. A little commission there.
Great.

So he sends out these men, I send you out as lambs among wolves Maybe heard that line before and that's also it's in this scene here where you get the famous line the harvest truly is great But the laborers are few and Jesus told them carry neither money bag knapsack nor sandals So just go you trust in God don't be Distracted by material concerns at all. But this is where it gets awesome, right? So the 70 come back, let me quote, then the 70 returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name. Ah, amazing, wonderful, like they got it, it worked. It'd be like Rainn Wilson, like I want to be an actor and make lots of money and be famous on a famous TV show. And he did it, he got it, just like these guys, they did exactly what they were commissioned to do right? I mean that great success even the demons at least they thought they did exactly the demons are subject to us in your name They even gave credit to Jesus They're so excited full of joy the demons obeyed them in the name of Jesus, and what was Jesus's response? Like always never

We'll talk about what his response was tomorrow. But I don't want to leave you on a total cliffhanger. Today, let's think about, let's pray about how we might be mis-aiming. We may be mis-aiming on what we think matters, what we think is important, what we think has significance, what we think will make us happy. Where are we mis-aiming? We'll finish that story of Jesus' reaction We'll finish that story of Jesus' reaction to their joy tomorrow.
