I pray we all find the Second Mountain sooner rather than later.
Good morning. Welcome to Morning Motivation brought to you by the Public Square app and Patriot Gold Group. Felt wonderful to do a full-length politics by faith episode that's available right now about the soul. Thank you for your patience on how long it took me to get back on the bandwagon here with our family moving. It took me a lot. I underestimated how stressful is the word, although yeah, I just underestimated how much time and energy it would take to move. So I apologize for not getting on the bandwagon quicker. This week we're talking about Luke 10 and what Jesus said to his disciples, you really need to be rejoicing in, because the disciples just did a rejoiceable thing. They just did a thing that anyone would rejoice in. They did what Jesus said and they were demons were obeying them and it's amazing and Jesus is like no what you really need to rejoice in is that your name is written in heaven. And I just think about this I haven't heard this story ever until recently but now I think about it because I always think about how no matter what you want in this world fame money whatever it's not gonna make you happy. It just won't. So what will make you happy?

Well, Jesus told you. The fact that your name is written in heaven. From a secular side, there's a book by David Brooks called The Second Mountain. David Brooks, a writer for the New York Times, and his life hit rock bottom. His wife left him. He's estranged from his kids and he just lived a terrible life, a really sad life. And you realize eventually that there are two mountains in life. The first is the first mountain you climb, the one that you're pressured to climb, the one you're expected to climb, the mountain of personal ambition.

And if you're lucky, you realize that this mountain is a waste of time early in the climb. Or maybe you go all the way to the top, and you realize that it's not worth it. But then you climb the second mountain. And the second mountain is not about personal ambition, it's about serving others. It's about serving something bigger than yourself. Now this is a secular book, but it gets close to the truth, closer than even many Christians get.

It's nice coming from a man who reached the pinnacle of his success, but still lost everything in the process. John Piper has reasons why Jesus said not to rejoice in your earthly success over the ministry, which is the most important thing. I mean, Jesus gave a test to the 70 and they succeeded. And Jesus said, yeah, that's great, but here's the real thing to rejoice in. So what are the potential dangers of rejoicing in earthly success, even ministry success, even a success that you'd think is a good Christian thing to be successful in? The first is legalism. Piper says if ministry is not the overflow of joy in Christ, it will become the achievement of joy and it won't be in Christ. If our work is not coming out of joy, it will become the desperate striving after joy. Oh that's so good, that's such a good point. If your ministry is not coming out of joy, it will be the striving after joy and you'll never get it.

Second potential pitfall of rejoicing in earthly success, even ministry success is authenticity. To the degree that we are not thrilled to be saved, we will not be able to commend Christ with authenticity as our all satisfying savior. There will always be a sense of inauthenticity in our ministry and our witness. If he does not satisfy me, why am I trying to show him to others?" People will pick up on that. The third potential pitfall is love. To the degree that we are not thrilled to be saved, our love for other people will be compromised. Because what is love but to labor at any cost to ourselves to give people what is best for them, what is fully and eternally satisfying? That labor of love is weakened by every degree of joy that we do not find in our own salvation. The fact that your name is written in heaven.

That's amazing. The labor of love to serve others is weakened by every degree of joy we do not find in our own salvation. Finally, death. To the degree that we are not thrilled to be saved, we will approach our own death without peace. We will be tormented late at night with a nagging fear that we loved service more than the Savior. I lied one more shame to the degree that we are not thrilled to be saved we will be afraid to face the Lord on the last day when he asks what did you enjoy most in the life I gave you on earth how will we face him how will we face him if we must confess you were not my most essential joy my most essential joy was in this achievement or this thing or this passion of mine that wasn't you. So what do we do with this? It's just about setting your eyes right, setting your heart right, fixing your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith. That's where we have to find all of our joy and pray for the people who are still trying to find it in all the wrong places, like Rainn Wilson, who kicked off this week, was the inspiration for this week, who at the height of his fame, still, it wasn't enough.
