I never understood this before I was a Christian. Many Christians try to make this way more complicated than it needs to be. Why do we make it so complicated? Because we don't want the truth to be true.
Good morning. Welcome to the Morning Motivation brought to you by Patriot Goal Group, Public Square. Really excited for this week. The theme of the week is Proverbs 9 10. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. What does it mean to fear the Lord? That's the question this week.< What does it mean to fear the Lord? Before I was a Christian, I had no idea what that meant. It sounds like a bad thing. Why would I want to fear Him? It doesn't make sense. If God existed, why would He want me to be scared of Him? Fear Him? I'm not going to do that. I just didn't get it. I don't think a lot of Christians don't get it either. I think we make it a lot more complicated than it needs to be. So there's lots of passages about fearing the Lord. It's all throughout the Bible. So we better get it right. And again I think we, well I know why, we'll explain this week, but we Christians go through these great gymnastics to try and make it seem different or more complicated. It means What does it mean? Fear him. It means fear him.

You should be afraid of him. Deuteronomy 2.25, this day I will... Oh, you're already turning away. Ah, bummer. Notice how you feel right now. Like you feel, oh, so many people pressed forward or next or stop. I don't want to hear anymore. Yeah, that's why. That's why Christians do this whole like, oh, it really means respect. Like, yeah, kind of. I mean, like, sort of. Or people are like, oh, it means to be in awe of or reverence towards. Sure. Part of it. It also means to fear. Deuteronomy 225. This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you." Means fear. Now, for the unbeliever, the fear of God, you better be scared of him because if you don't get it right, you're going to hell forever. Luke 12 5, but I will warn you." Whom to fear? Fear Him who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him. The apostles didn't shy away from talking about hell. Hebrews 10.31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Indeed it is. You think, oh, that's just for the unbelievers. But we believers, it's different. Not entirely. A little, little different. Now the fear comes from a complete understanding of the depths of your sin. Your fear comes from a complete understanding of your inadequacy. John MacArthur says, the testimony of Scripture is clear. All sinners, even strong believers with mature faith, are right to cower in the light of God's holiness. Give an example, Genesis 18, Abraham confessed in the presence of God that he was dust and ashes. Job said, I've heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eyes see you, therefore I retract and I repent in dust and ashes. Ezra 9, the high priest's sense of shame as he came before the Lord, Habakkuk had a vision of God's power, and his knees began to rattle. He said, I hear, and my body trembles, my lips quiver at the sound, rottenness enters into my bones, my legs tremble beneath me. It's Habakkuk 3.16. Isaiah 6 describes how Isaiah saw God sitting on a throne. Isaiah cried out, Woe is me, for I am ruined. All right, this is Isaiah. Isaiah, I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips. But we, like who do you think I am? Who do I think I am? And I'm like, oh, hey, God. Hey, God, what's up?

How you doing? Oh, it's me. Oh, it's me, Mike. And Isaiah's, woe is me, I'm ruined, because I'm the man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Isaiah 6.5. In today's world, we see that reaction to seeing God, having visions of God, and we think, oh wow, Isaiah doesn't have a lot of self-esteem. No, no, no. When he saw a vision of God, he was shattered to the core with his own sense of sinfulness. It wrecked him. Because when you see God as holy, the only proper response is seeing yourself as unholy, recognizing that the true, maybe for the first time, well, definitely for the first time, the true, true depth of your sin. And if you aren't crushed by that realization, by the realization of your sin, then you don't understand God's holiness. And if you don't understand God's holiness, well, I can see why you can deceive yourself into thinking you have nothing to fear. But for those who truly understand, you better be afraid. We have a lot more to cover on this throughout the week. I'm grateful you're here. Mike Slater dot locals dot com. Commercial free. Transcripts the night before. Transcripts the night before.
