The Bible says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom". This "fear of God" makes a lot of people uncomfortable. But why is it necessary? What happens if you don't fear God?
Good morning, welcome to the Morning Motivation, brought to you by Patriot Gold Group, Public Square App. I'm really excited for this week. I don't know how it's going to be received by anyone, but it's okay. This is William Grinnell, British guy, 1600s. He said, we fear man so much because we fear God so little. One fear cures the other. When man's terror scares you, turn your thoughts to the wrath of God. How good is that? We fear man so much because we fear God so little. And we're told not to fear God by our culture. The Bible says to fear God. Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. We're told to fear God in the Bible, but then in our modern culture, we're told, oh no, no, no, no, don't, don't. It doesn't mean that. That's not like, don't, it's not, it doesn't mean fear. It means something else. So we don't fear God. And then we fear man and we have anxiety and all these other problems that we have in America today. So we talked a little bit about this yesterday, that atheists, non-believers, they hear this fear God thing and they think it's bad. So then Christians, in an effort to, I don't know, be liked, try to explain it away as like, oh, no, no, it's not scared of, it's like respect, respect God and be in awe of God. It's like, yeah, you should do those two things too, but it's also, it means scared. You should be fearful of God, the creator of the universe. We've all heard of God's wrath, but in this context we just forget. Or we say, oh that's the Old Testament. God, he's different now. He's had a real change of heart. This is Jonathan Edwards. The reason why they do not go down to hell at each moment is not because God, in whose power they are, is not then very angry with them, as he is with many miserable creatures now tormented in hell, who there feel and bear the fierceness of his wrath. Yea, God is a great deal more angry with great numbers that are now on earth, doubtless with many that are now in this congregation, who it may be are at ease than he is with many of those who are now in the flames of hell. So that it is not because God is unmindful of their wickedness. It's not like he's like, oh, God didn't know. He didn't know. He doesn't know that I'm wicked. And does not resent it, that he does not let loose his hand and cut them off. God is not altogether such as one as themselves, though they may imagine him to be so. The wrath of God burns against them. Their damnation does not slumber. The pit is prepared. The fire is made ready. The furnace is now hot, ready to receive them. The flames do now rage and glow. The glittering sword is wet and held over them, and the pit hath opened its mouth under them." Oh, jeez. So you should fear that. That's John of Edwards. Jesus protects you from God's wrath. Ezekiel 7, 8, I will soon pour out my wrath upon you, and spend my anger against you. That is God's wrath. Instead of being poured out on you, it was poured out on Jesus. You grateful yet? Romans 3, 23, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, who God put forward as a propitiation by his blood to be received by faith Propitiation payment to God to satisfy and remove his just disfavor just disfavor wrath Payment to God to satisfy and remove his just disfavor Who gives the Jesus Christ who God put forward as a propitiation. Jesus took the wrath, his wrath. You better be scared of God's wrath. Because if you're not scared of God's wrath, then you're not going to be grateful of the fact that Jesus took the wrath for you. Took it upon himself. Why would you be grateful of that if you don't believe God has it? And it is okay to be scared of it. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Tomorrow, I want to talk about one of my all-time favorite sermons on this point. The audience to whom this sermon was given makes it all the sweeter. We'll do that tomorrow.
