What was Peter's reaction when Jesus filled his nets with fish? It wasn't to be grateful to Jesus. Peter wasn't "in awe" of what Jesus could do. He reacted differently than the average American Christian would. And what did the angel say in Revelation 14, of ALL the things the angel could have said? And why then do we dismiss this command so easily?
Good morning. Welcome to The Morning Motivation, brought to you by Page Your Goal Group and the wonderful Public Square app. I hope you've enjoyed this week talking about the fear of God, fearing God, fearing the Lord. What does that mean? I think the most well-known scripture about fear is probably what we started off the week with. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Another one is Philippians 2.12, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Think about that. That's wild. It doesn't say work out your own salvation with happiness and joy. With fear and trembling. Gosh, we better understand what fear means. If you want to be a Christian, it says, work out your own salvation with what? With fear. Oh, that means, um, no, no, you better, we better know what that means. How about this one? This is Revelation. And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth and to every nation, tribe, and tongue, and people. And he said with a loud voice, what did he say? Right? What did he say? What did the angel say? He could say anything. You'd think he'd start off with the most important thing. I don't know how much time the angel has, but he came out with the most, number one. What's the number one thing the angel said? Fear God. How can we as Christians follow through with this impulse to explain this away as if it's nothing? When it's the number one, here it is, fear God, this angel, this is one thing, fear God and give Him glory because the hour of His judgment has come. Worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and the springs of waters." It's Revelation 14. Fear God. Give Him glory. I should just end right there. Let me share one more. Maybe two more. Luke 5. So Peter was fishing. Couldn't catch anything. Jesus came to him, put the nets down, and there were so many fish they couldn't haul it in, right? So what did Peter do? If Peter was an American Christian today, he'd say, huh, Jesus, cool, thanks, dude. You're my pal. What a guy. And then go back to fishing or whatever. It's not what Peter did. Peter fell at Jesus' feet. And what did he say? He said, Oh, Jesus, thank you so much. That's awesome. I'm so grateful. I'm in awe. Did he say, I'm in awe that you could do that? Because remember, that's one of the things we've been saying all week, is that Christians explain away fear of God as being like, Oh, you need to be in awe and you need to have respect. Nope, fear. So did Peter come in and say, Oh, I'm so in awe that you could do that. That's amazing. Or, Wow, I respect you, Jesus, so much. Thank you. Nope. He said, Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. That's something, isn't it? All Jesus did was let the fish come in the net. And Peter had the reaction of, Get away from me. Go away from me, because I am sinful. Not wow I'm grateful or wow I'm at all. I am sinful. Amazing.
All he could do when confronted with the power of God, all he could do was see his own sinfulness. And that needs to be us. It's when you see the power and awesomeness of God, it's not, wow, cool, God's great. It's, whew, I am a sinful man. Deuteronomy 2.12, And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul. It's funny, we only quote that one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, strength. What about fear? The next line, fear the Lord your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name. He is your praise. He is your God. Who is? The one who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes. Fear God means fear God. You are a sinner. You better be fearful of the wrath you deserve. And that then turns into gratitude because Jesus paid the price of those sins for you. It's a very simple story. Fear God, walk in his ways, serve him, love him. He made the world and his judgment will come. And that is the beginning of wisdom. Everything will fall into place when you get that ordered right. Everything will fall into place when we give him the glory. And why would we give Everything will fall into place when we give him the glory. And why would we give fear him.
