The Christians in the first church weren't passive nice guys. They went into synagogues and spoke the truth boldly. What they said resulted in them being killed, so no one would have characterized them as nice. What posture is a Christian then to have? Paul tells Timothy to be like a teacher, soldier, athlete and farmer.
Good morning. Welcome to the Morning Motivation brought to you by the Patriot Gold Group and the Public Square app. We've been talking the last couple days about being nice. Yes, of course, right? That's part of the fruit of the Spirit, but not at the cost of not standing up for the truth. Then, no, that's not a virtue, then. Not standing up for the truth, cowardice, is not a virtue. And we just made the point in the last segment that when Jesus spoke to the Pharisees, there was no dialogue. There were no compliment sandwiches. It wasn't like, Oh, you Pharisees, you're doing great. You're doing pretty good, but I think you could do a little better over here. No, he spoke boldly and in a way that resulted in them wanting to kill him. I was reading yesterday Acts 14. It says, Now at Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue. So they went into these places and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So they remained for a long time speaking boldly for the Lord. Speaking boldly. Speaking nicely? No. Boldly. So what posture? Oh, by the way, there's another thing that our culture has told Christians to do, and that is just live your life well, and people will come to you asking, what is it, why are you so different? And then you can nicely, quietly tell them the gospel. Don't actually preach, don't actually speak, don't actually tell people the good news. Just live it and they'll come to you. That's not what they did in the first church. That's not what they did in the book of Acts. They went places. They spoke boldly. So what posture should a Christian have? Well good for us that Paul wrote a note to Timothy telling him what to do. Tim, my poor buddies, Timothy was vacillating. So he needed to be reminded, Paul says, the gift that was first in him. Because God did not give you a spirit of timidity, but he gave you a spirit of power and love and discipline. So don't be a people pleaser, Tim. So what posture should the disciple have? Paul tells us 2 Timothy 2. 2 Tim 2.2

Paul says, The things what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach, teach others also. Sharon's suffering is a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. And it is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. So this is great. Paul gives four analogies, four professions here. Teacher, soldier, athlete, farmer. That's the posture you should have. He lays it right out. The Bible is very simple. It should be like a teacher, a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer. So let's break these down. And this is how we should be. By the way, the Greek word here for to be strong, the Greek tense is to keep on being empowered. So it's not be strong you, yourself. It's empowerment on. It's the keep being empowered, right? He's the source of power and it comes through you and you need to like open up that source that always can come and flow through you. Let God's power flow through you. See the difference between you be strong versus keep on being empowered. See the difference between those two? That's how the Greek writes it. So you got to be like a teacher. What do teachers do? Ideally, not today, but I thought that the woke teachers today. What's a teacher supposed to do? A teacher is supposed to pass on the truth. Pass on doctrine. Pass down scripture. So that's our job as men and women of God to pass down the word to the next generation. How do you be a good teacher?

Well, you clearly articulate the truth, you be loyal to the truth, and you continually teach the truth. Being a good teacher is all about the truth. That's what we need to be. Let's take a break. Tomorrow, we'll come back and we'll finish this up. We've got to be like the teacher, the soldier, the athlete, and the farmer. That's our posture. None of this is about being nice in and of itself. Nice and not telling the truth, that's not good. That's not it. It's most important, telling the truth. Mike Slater, diallocals.com. Night before, transcript, and commercial free.
