The old Reagan line, "Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction," is true for our country and it's true in the Bible as well. The Israelites continually failed in the book of Judges for one specific reason.
Good morning, welcome to Morning Motivation, brought to you by Patriot Gold Group and the Public Square app. I want to make a point here that I started to make on the morning show, Breitbart News Daily, Sirius XM, but I want to make it here more fully. Maybe you've heard the story before of in Joshua 4 where the Israelites can cross on dry land One wonderful part of the story is that the waters only part when they take that first step in the water So it so you they're waiting for the waters to part the water just won't part they have to take that first step and then God will act after that. They have to trust God enough to start in the direction. I just thought that was a nice point, a detail that God put in the story. But then after that, God told Joshua to tell everyone to take 12 stones from the Jordan River and place them on the dry land as a memorial. That this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time, in time to come, what do these stones mean? Then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever." It's great, right? We have memorials all over the place for this very reason. And the story had a nice happy ending there, if you stop reading there. They did what God and Joshua said, and they put a nice memorial. Beautiful. Skip to verse 19. 19 And he said to the people of Israel, When your children ask their fathers in times to come, what do these stones mean? 20 Then you shall let your children know that Israel passed over the Jordan on dry ground. 21 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, just as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 22 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty that you may fear the Lord your God forever So the Israelites are in the promised land now life is good Just got to be faithful to your covenant with God and obey the commands of the Torah and life will be good Well, how'd they do? skip ahead to judges to So judges are all about how the Israeli Israelites totally failed in doing that. Israel did not follow God. They became corrupt. And instead of being a model that was separate from the rest of the world, they became no different than the Canaanites in this case. So Judges 2, the Israelites were called to drive out the Canaanites, drive out their child sacrifice, drive out their corruption and all their wicked rituals. And the Israelites didn't.
In chapter 2 it says, the Israelites have not obeyed God. And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. That line is over and over again. The children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. But check out what happens next. This is Judges 2. And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua. So when Joshua was alive, the people served the Lord. Did he great? And all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua. So Joshua dies, but the elders are still there, and everyone's doing great. The elders who had seen all the great work that the Lord had done for Israel. And Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110, and they buried him within the boundaries. And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. Here it is. And there arose another generation after them, who did not know the Lord, or the work that he had done for Israel. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, who served the Baals. And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. So they took the gods of the Canaanites. And they provoked the Lord to anger. They abandoned the Lord and served the Baals and the Asheroth. So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And He sold them into the land of their surrounding enemies so that they could no longer withstand their enemies whenever they marched out the hand of the Lord was against them for harm as the Lord had warned and as the Lord had sworn to them and they were in terrible distress how about the line so Joshua and all the elders die and then arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.
They did not know the Lord and the work he had done. This is why it's so important to keep these stories alive. Now we can make a political point here about America. We have to keep the story of America alive. That's the Ronald Reagan line. Freedom is a fragile thing and never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not by our inheritance, it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation. For it comes only once to a people and those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it." Again, that's the political point, it is true. And it was true of the Israelites as well, with their love of God. If we don't tell the story, our stories, of how God saved us and if we don't tell those stories starting with our children then we'll be no better than the Israelite children who once again will do evil in the sight of the Lord let's make sure we do better what memorials do you have in your life? Which stories do you need to tell. About God So that your children and others will come to know him and love him as well So that your children and others will come to know him and love him as well Serving as well Mike Slater about locals calm transcript commercial free night before Mike Slater locals
