My favorite line in the Bible for a while has been "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." This idea is right up there: the idea that if you become a Christian, the slave will be made free and the freeman will become a slave.
Good morning. Welcome to the Morning Motivation, brought to you by Patriot Gold Group and the Public Square app. Tackling a difficult topic today, talking about the Bible and slavery. People say, oh, the Bible condones slavery. The reason we're talking about this is because we were talking about abortion on Monday and the parallels between abortion and slavery. It just got on my mind. So people say, oh, the Bible condones slavery, so therefore the Bible is wrong and old and irrelevant and you Christians blah blah blah. The Bible doesn't condone slavery, it actually completely changes the entire structure of it. You can hear yesterday's episode for the first two points but here is my favorite point about this. Start with 1st Corinthians 7 17 only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him and to which God has called him. Walk in the way. Here is each, is verse 20, each one should remain in the condition in which he was called. Were you a slave when called? Do not be concerned about it. One translation says, don't let it trouble you. But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself to the opportunity. For he who is called in the Lord as a bond-servant or a slave is a free man in the Lord. Likewise, he who is free when called is a slave to Christ. That is so unbelievable. So on planet Earth, your short time here, next week we're going to talk all about pilgrims and how we are pilgrims in this world. Totally change your mindset, your relationship between you, this earth, and heaven. If only we could be more like the pilgrims. So on planet earth, you may be a slave, you may be a master, but now that you're a Christian, you slave, you are free in the Lord, and you're going to go to heaven. That's unbelievable.
Now here's the great role reversal of all. If you are free when you become a Christian, if you're a free man, now you're a slave. You were free, now you become a Christian, now you're a slave. To whom? To Christ. You are a slave to Christ now. Now don't worry about it. The yoke is light. And being a slave to Christ is the best thing imaginable. John MacArthur says being a slave of the Christ may be the best way to define a Christian. We are, as believers, slaves of Christ. You may never suspect that from the language of modern Christianity today. In contemporary Christianity, the language is anything but slave language. It's about freedom. It's about liberation. It's about health, wealth, prosperity, finding your own fulfillment, fulfilling your own dreams, finding your own purpose. We often hear that God loves you unconditionally and wants you to be all that you want to be. He wants to fulfill every ambition, every desire, every hope, every dream. In fact, there are books being written about dreams as if they were gifts from God, which God then having given them is bound to fulfill. Personal fulfillment, personal liberation, personal satisfaction, all bound up in an old term of evangelical Christianity, a personal relationship. That's modern. But the Bible really says now you're a slave. Many of the letters Paul included introduces himself as a slave to Christ. You are owned. You've been purchased by His blood. Acts 20. You've been bought, not with silver and gold, but with what? 1 Peter 1.18. The precious blood of Jesus Christ. That is the ultimate role reversal. So if you were a slave and then become a Christian, now you're free. You're a free man. You're free in Christ. If you were a free man and now you're a Christian, now you're a slave, a slave to Christ. See how that works? It's beautiful. Now, one more on this tomorrow, because we've got to talk about what it means to be a slave of Christ. But let's just marvel at this role reversal. It's just like the exalted will be humbled, the humbled be exalted.
I love it. When you become a Christian, which is open to everybody, the slaves become free in Christ, and the free become slaves in Christ. How fantastic is that? Mike Slater, dot locals, dot com.
