Ut oh, did you see the "He Gets Us" Super Bowl commercial? It was, to use a woke term, problematic. This week we'll talk about why it's at least misleading it not outright blasphemy. Today, let's focus on the scene in the Bible it's referring to.
Good morning. Welcome to the Morning Motivation brought to you by the Patriot Goal Group and the Public Square app. Oh no, the He Gets Us Super Bowl ad. All right. That will be the theme of the week. Here's the problem with it. Here's the too long, didn't read. In short, problem. This advertisement, this message promotes cultural tolerance of unrepentant sin disguised as biblical love. Say it again. This message promotes cultural tolerance of unrepentant sin disguised as biblical love. So the commercial, if you haven't seen it, these are AI-generated looking, they look AI-generated, pictures of different people washing different

people's feet. So the first one's like a 20 year old guy washing the feet of his father. It's a good way to intro things, right? Not offensive there. Then you have a cop washing the feet of a black, it's like criminal. Then you have a popular blonde girl washing the feet of like an emo outcast girl in high school. Then a white rancher washing the feet of a Native American man. Or a woman washing the feet of another younger woman outside of an abortion clinic.
0:01:23
Then a woman washing the feet of an older, maybe like an older mom who's an alcoholic. Then a man working at the oil rigs washing the feet of an environmentalist protester outside of the oil field. Then a white woman washing the feet of an illegal immigrant who's about to get on a bus to Chicago. Then a white family washing the feet of a Muslim family. Then an old black and white man sitting on a rocket chair with their feet in a tub. They're like both watching each other's feet.
0:01:50
I don't know what that one is. And it ends with a priest washing the feet of a gay trans black man. And it says, Jesus didn't teach hate. He washed feet. He gets us, all of us. Okay, so a couple things. They all fit perfectly along the woke hierarchy. Except for two of them, I guess maybe the son washing the dad's feet and it looks like a daughter washing an alcoholic mom's feet.
0:02:33
Those are the ones that are more of a proper order. But the rest fall along woke hierarchy. Josh Berry, he said, a liberal washing the feet of someone in a MAGA hat or a Black Lives Matter protester washing a police officer's feet. That would have been subversive, but this wasn't because these were strictly following the oppressed oppressor intersectionality guidelines. The people today, we are told, are the most vulnerable, are actually the most privileged of all. You can't joke about Dylan Mulvaney, the man who pretends to be a little girl you can't joke about him
0:03:15
Because he's oppressed, huh, if you can't joke about him that means he holds all the power So every one of these dynamics here was was following along with those woke intersectional guidelines, that's one Second point you go to he gets us calm and go to the website. Here's what it says in the about us section. I'm not making this up. It's about us. He gets us as a diverse group of Jesus followers, okay, with a wide variety of faith journeys, find, and lived experiences. That's a progressive buzzword. That's a woke buzzword. Our work represents... but listen, that's not... no red flag, just a yellow flag. Our work represents the input from Christians who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
0:03:59
So Christians as many others as well as many others who though not Christians Share a deep admiration for the man that Jesus was Mmm, that's gonna be a no for me. That's gonna be a red flag now We are deeply inspired and curious to explore his story Well, that's a weird Our work represents the input from Christians who believe that Jesus is the Son of God, as well as many others who, though not Christians, share a deep admiration for the man Jesus was and we are deeply inspired and curious to share his story.
0:04:33
We look at the biography of Jesus through a modern lens to find new relevance in often overlooked moments and themes from his life. So I'm out. That's bad news. Bad news. Just like you wouldn't have a church led by elders who have a deep admiration for Jesus, you shouldn't be listening to any sort of message from these people either. Because by the way, you can't have a deep admiration for a man who says, I am the son of God. If you don't think he was the son of God, and he says,
0:05:05
I am the son of God, you can't say wow I have such a deep admiration for that lunatic who thinks he's God or he's right in which case you're a Christian like I understand it's like oh wow yeah I deeply admire him you don't he's crazy people back in the day, well they did kill him, but even before they killed him, they tried to kill him for blasphemy. He said, very truly, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am. They tried to kill him for blasphemy. And people today were supposed to believe like, oh yes, I admire him. No, you can't admire him and not think he's Lord.
0:06:04
That's the formulation from C.S. Lewis. He's either a liar, a lunatic, or Lord. So I'm not going to follow any advice on biblical teaching or biblical insider doctrine from people who think that he's a good teacher. Because he's not. You guys, if you don't believe he's Lord, then you think he's a liar or a lunatic. So before we get to why this is wrong and very bad, I think this is a very false message, very dangerous message that he gets us is spreading.
0:06:38
This false picture of Jesus proclaimed was at the biggest audience in the country, in the Super Bowl, right? It's very bad. It's bad for Christians, bad for America, bad for everything. Let's take some time to read it. Can we read John 13? I don't know if we've ever read a whole chapter here before, but I think we should start off with the scene. So John 13,

here's, now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of the world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. We should stop there, do a whole sermon on that. He loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon's son did betray him. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper.

He laid aside his outer garments and, taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, why do you wash my feet? Jesus answered him, What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand. Peter said to him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.
0:07:57
We will explain all this throughout the week. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. And Jesus said to him, The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you. For he knew who was to betray him. That is why he said, Not all of you are clean. When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said
0:08:22
to them, Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
0:08:53
I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But the scripture will be fulfilled. He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me. I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place, you may believe that I am he. Truly truly I say to you, whoever receives the one I send, receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."

Okay, there's a couple things there, obviously, that need some explaining, and we will, but it's also worth noting Luke 22, which is the companion scripture to this. At this time, the disciples were arguing which one's the greatest, which is great, so good. So while we're over here quibbling about who's the greatest, Jesus is right here. I am washing your feet. All right, so that's the background. Let's just sit on that for a day. We'll come back to this tomorrow and we'll dive deeper into some of the confusing text there and then talk about why this advertisement is at least deceiving if not outright blasphemous

and dangerous. But again, in the meantime for us, how about the fact that we are over here arguing about how great we are, thinking how great we are, when we instead need to be worshipping Him.
